THE SCENT THEY'LL SPEND ALL NIGHT TRYING TO PLACE

HOW IT WAS MADE

Two scents that refused to share a bottle.

Most fragrances pick a side. Warm or cold. Sweet or smoky. Soft or sharp. They pick, because picking is safe and because the alternative usually ends in a mess.

We didn't want to pick. And it nearly cost us the whole scent. Saffron and jasmine open it warm and golden, the kind of start that promises sweetness. Then fir resin, cedar, ambroxan and oakmoss come in underneath and pull the whole thing somewhere mineral and grey.

On paper it sounded like character. In practice, the two halves went to war, the sweetness dulling the smoke, the smoke souring the sweetness. Every early version smelled like an argument nobody won.

The fix wasn't force. It was patience.

We worked the base in so slowly the warm top never noticed it was being pulled somewhere colder — until the two halves stopped fighting and started agreeing. Warm, then grey. Soft, then flint. That's why nobody can place what you're wearing. It isn't one thing. It's two that were never supposed to work — and do.

WHEN THEY ASK WHAT YOU'RE WEARING

"It's called Hint of Flint. Nobody can ever quite place it — that's kind of the point."

Three acts, on skin.
